Discover secrets of the sea
This Seaweek you are invited to build a 4D model of a shark, dolphin or an orca and inspect a Southern Right Whale vertebrate at the Pop-Up Marine Discovery Centre on display at the Port Lincoln Library from Monday 4 until Sunday 10 September.
Marine Parks Regional Coordinator Dr Shelley Paull said Seaweek is great opportunity to appreciation the ocean and gaining a deeper understanding of the unique marine species and their amazing temperate marine habitats.
“No matter what your age, the Marine Discovery Centre is an opportunity to grow your curiosity. Younger children will be able to develop scientific skills in the discovery sand pit, dig up sea creatures and use magnifying glasses to get a closer look. Everyone can enjoy adding to their knowledge for local marine life and deepen their understanding of coast and marine ecosystems.
“Our community has a deeply connected to the marine environment however a Natural History Museum or Marine Discovery Centre is a bit of a novelty for our community. We do not have one here year round, so I encourage you to come have some fun at this temporary centre. The display will include Barngarla Aboriginal heritage and culture information on the importance of Sea Country,” Shelley said.
“It is highly interactive display, as well as providing information on the role of Marine Parks. You will be able to touch the bones and skulls of marine animals as well as handle a variety of shells. There will be a microscope and eye clops set up to get close up view of sand, coral and salt loving coastal plants,” Shelley said.
Manager Library Services Louise Mrdjen said that the Port Lincoln Library is thrilled to once again to be collaborating with Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula to host a new interpretive Marine Discovery Centre to celebrate Seaweek 2017.
“An engaging and interpretive exhibit, the Marine Discovery Centre (suitable for all ages) will enable our local community to access information and learn about the ocean, the significance that the marine environment has on our lives and our planet and the importance of protecting this amazing resource for future generations, ” Louise said.
The pop-up centre is free to enter and is a collaboration between Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula and the Port Lincoln Library.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Marine Discovery Centre any time during Library hours.
Guided group tours and presentations by Dr Shelley Paull are by appointment only.
